Can I move to Portugal without choosing an investment route?
Portugal has several residence categories. Nationality, the reason for your stay and the work or study you intend to do determine which rules need checking. Begin with those facts; an investment-linked route is only one category.
Do EU citizens need the same process?
No. AIMA describes a registration process for EU, EEA, Swiss and Andorran nationals. For a stay beyond three months, the registration certificate is requested at the local municipality within 30 days after that initial period. Work, study or sufficient resources and applicable health-cover conditions must be addressed. Family members with other nationalities have a different residence-card process. AIMA: registration for European nationals.
Which routes should a non-EU applicant research?
These are starting points for research, not interchangeable permissions. The required visa, documents and application procedure depend on the category and your circumstances.
Remote work for an employer or clients abroad
AIMA has a residence category for work performed remotely for an employer or service recipient outside Portugal. Its permit application requires the corresponding residence visa and evidence of the overseas employment or service relationship, alongside accommodation and other checks. A foreign job alone is not permission to work from Portugal. AIMA: remote-work residence requirements.
Retirement or living on your own income
Portugal’s consular service provides a residence-visa category for eligible non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss applicants who intend to retire or live on their own income. The applicant must meet the supporting-document and financial requirements; owning a home does not replace the visa process. Portugal government: retirement and own-income visa.
Higher education
A student residence application requires admission or acceptance and the applicable supporting evidence, such as enrolment, accommodation and health cover. AIMA describes some document exemptions and a possible route after lawful entry without the usual residence visa. Those exceptions require their own assessment; they are not permission to skip the process. AIMA: higher-education student residence.
If you intend to take a local job, provide services or manage a business, ask which work-related category covers the actual activity. Use the work plan in the planning checklist to make that conversation specific.
Can family members apply with me?
Family rights depend on the principal applicant’s status and the relationship. AIMA’s family-reunification guidance requires evidence of family ties and, where relevant, dependency, accommodation and financial support. Adult children and parents should not be assumed to qualify on the same terms as a spouse or minor child. Ask about the current timing and process for each person before organising a joint move. AIMA: family reunification.
What does Portugal’s ARI route cover?
ARI is Portugal’s investment-residence category for qualifying applicants. It can allow residence and work in Portugal, subject to its conditions. It does not establish that any particular investment qualifies or that it is suitable for you. AIMA: the ARI programme.
AIMA’s current FAQ states minimum presence of seven days in the first year and fourteen days in subsequent two-year periods. Renewal also involves continuing compliance, including maintaining the relevant investment where applicable. Check how the rules apply to the dates on your own permit. AIMA: ARI renewal and minimum-stay FAQ.
Compare this selected category with the Greek property-investor route and Malta MPRP in the selected-route comparison. That comparison is not a catalogue of all ways to live in those countries.
Does a residence permit decide my tax status?
No. Portugal applies separate tax-residence tests to your presence and circumstances. A low immigration minimum-stay requirement does not resolve tax residence. Review your planned days, homes, work and existing country connections using the cross-border tax planning guide. Portuguese Tax Authority: individual tax residence.
Does Portuguese residence let me live anywhere in Europe?
No. Short visits to another Schengen country are different from moving there or working there. Travel requires suitable valid documents and compliance with entry and stay conditions; a second country may require its own permission for a longer stay or work. Your Europe: travel documents and entry conditions; European Commission: moving between EU countries.
Prepare a useful first enquiry
Write down who would move, each nationality, where everyone would work or study, and the intended timetable. Then use the free worksheet or ask a general question. Selecting Portugal records an educational interest; it does not select an investment or authorize a provider introduction.
